Oregon Beer News, 12/10/2018
December 10 is National Lager Day, celebrating the bottom-fermenting, cold-conditioned styles of beer that still make up the majority of beer consumed in the world. Of course it’s not just light macro lagers to celebrate but the entire gamut of delicious lager styles being brewed today. To celebrate the day, it’s simple: drink a lager!
In the meantime, here is the Oregon beer news for this Monday the 10th; as usual I’ll be updating throughout the day with news as I find it, so check back occasionally for the latest.
Kobold Brewing now has its new brewery in Redmond up and running, and tonight the first beer brewed at the new brewery will be tapped at The Vault Taphouse: “Join me Monday evening at 5pm for the release of the first beer brewed at the new brewery. For you Crooked Fate fans I played around with the recipe a little, just a little, and upped the haze and hoppy juiciness. First reviews, pouring right out of the zwickle in the brite tank, have been excellent, come see for yourself!” (From the email newsletter.)
The Bier Stein (Eugene) is hosting a release of Pelican Brewing‘s Cookie Monster from 5 to 7pm: “Last April two of our beloved patrons, Tripp and Carolyn Sommer, won a brew day and overnight stay at Pelican’s Cannon Beach location. They made the trip to Cannon Beach this fall and collaborated with Pelican’s brewer Coren to create “Cookie Monster” an Oatmeal Cookie Brown Ale, which premiered at the Holiday Ale Fest in Portland. We will be tapping a keg in house on Monday, December 10th at 5pm and at 7pm we will be raffling off a gift basket which includes a tin tacker, hoodie, hat, t-shirt, hydroflask, glassware, and $75 gift card to Pelican’s tap house. Cheers!”
Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting Bend’s Silver Moon Brewing for a tasting of three new beers: “Join us and Silver Moon for the introduction of Contrarium, a wine barrel-aged brett beer aged in both white wine and red wine barrels. They took the same base beer (a brett blond ale) and aged one half in Chardonnay, the other in Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot barrels. They are also introducing and pouring samples of the brand new Killer Queen, a Brut IPA.” It takes place from 5 to 8pm.
Rogue Ales (Newport) announced the return of its Straight Outta Newport Double IPA for January; from the press release: “Thirsty hop-heads looking for an unforgettable drinking experience can celebrate as Rogue Ales & Spirits’ massively hopped Straight Outta Newport…Oregon double IPA returns in January for a limited time. With the ABV amped up to 8.7%, this uncompromising beer bursts out of the can delivering intense notes of tropical fruit and citrus. Straight Outta Newport’s label art pays homage to Newport’s iconic Yaquina Bay Bridge and the Rogue brewers who collaborated on crafting this beer. “By looking at the Straight Outta Newport can, you can see exactly what matters to us: our coastal roots and the brewers who create the incredible beers we drink,” says Rogue General Manager Dharma Tamm. Straight Outta Newport…Oregon will be available in January nationwide for a limited time in 16 ounce four pack cans and on draft.”
Wayfinder Beer (Portland) has new canned lagers coming out this week (and will in fact be at Belmont Station with them tomorrow as well): “Winter is coming and Krampus is parched. Fear not, thirsty roamers and wanderers, for we are coming out with double trouble this Tuesday evening. Two awesome lagers — BeYOB Doppelback and Wayfinder Hell — in shiny, magical, limited-release 16 ounce cans. First come first serve. Come grab some cans-to-go and enjoy a rare Gravity Keg pour of BeYOB while you’re at it.”
Fort George Brewery (Astoria) has a new beer dropping Wednesday: “Waves of Silence Codename: Allision lands at the brewery this Wednesday (12/12) and around the Pacific Northwest soon after. Each batch of this 9% ABV Imperial Stout is a unique experience. Expect a new wave about once a month, during the darker seasons.” You can follow the details on the Waves of Silence series here.
Dirt Road Brewing (Corvallis): If you haven’t tried any beers from this very new brewery yet, two are newly on tap in Corvallis: “Our Lemon Wheat and NWIPA both just went on tap at Corvallis’ newest restaurant, Corvallis Tacovore! Our Lemon Wheat is a refreshing beer with a bready malt base with a fresh lemon, herbal and spicy character featuring Czech Saaz hops, fresh lemon peel and grains of paradise.”
