Oregon Beer News, 12/04/2012
Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Tuesday, the 4th of December. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
MacTarnahan’s Brewing (Portland) is holding an Ugly Sweater Party and beer release today, from 5 to 9pm, and will also be collecting gently used coats to donate to the Portland Rescue Mission—in fact, donation of a coat will get you a free pint. Judging for the ugly sweater will take place at 7pm with the grand prize being a $50 gift card an Mac’s prize pack. I don’t know what beer the “beer release” refers to, as they promise samples of their “new winter brews” but there will also be Humbug’r Eggnog and an appearance by Drunk Santa.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend) has their Deschutes Brewery University tonight featuring Winter Beer and Cheese Pairing, from 6 to 8pm at the Bend Pub’s upstairs Tap Room. “Learn all about the malts, hops, fruits, and spices that make up Winter Beers. Not only will you get to taste these beers, but learn what cheeses pair best with each flavor. From Deschutes Brewery, you’ll try The Abyss and Super Jubel and we’ve got guest bottles of Abominable from Hopworks Urban Brewery, Winter Ale from Anchor Brewing, Christmas Ale from St. Bernardus, and Fantome de Noel from Brasserie Fantome.” Tickets are available here; there are 16 left for $25 each at this time. This looks like a fantastic edition of DBU—you can’t go wrong with beer and cheese!
Coalition Brewing (Portland) is releasing their Maple Porter in 22-ounce bottles today, and to celebrate they’re offering up breakfast all day (or at least from when they open at 3pm). “We are releasing our Loving Cup Maple Porter Bottles! Come join us for $4 22oz bottles and breakfast all day…waffles, eggs, apple sage sausage and most certainly pure Vermont Maple Syrup! Special pricing for one day only, so come imbibe and stock up!” $4 is a great price and breakfast with Maple Porter sure sounds tasty.
Double Mountain Brewery (Hood River): Tonight is their Brewer’s Kitchen beer dinner, designed and presented by the Double Mountain brewers (a neat idea), featuring 5 courses and starting at 6pm. They have an excellent beer list being paired with the food, and for $50 you can get in on it (if it hasn’t sold out); call (541) 387-0042 to find out and reserve a spot.
Full Sail Brewing (Hood River) is releasing their Lord of Darkness Brewer’s Share Experimental beer tonight at the Portland Riverplace location, and Brewer Gavin Lord will be on hand to talk about the beer as well. “Gavin’s beer is a Cascadian Dark Ale brewed with Midnight Wheat, Flaked Oats, Crystal Malts, and 2-Row Pale. Lord of Darkness pours a devilishly dark ruby and wears a lacy white crown. Beware His Amarillos! Beware His Mosaics! While they may lend the sweet scent of blueberry and lemon, of spice and of pine, they will only lead to the bitter end He’s always held in store for you. But fear not! For only if you place your trust in His Darkliness may He lead you to Enlightenment. 7.0% ABV 70 IBU.” The event takes place from 5 to 6:30pm.
Cascade Brewing (Portland): Tonight’s Tap It Tuesday at the Barrel House at 6pm features “Live” Bourbon Bing Quad. “This NW style sour blond quad was aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels for 13 months before aging an additional four months on more than 150 lbs of fresh Bing cherries. Intense aromas of dark cherry and purple strawberry-almost like cherry sauvignon-are noticed up front. Tart, rich Bing cherry flesh notes on the palate lead to a tart, drying cherry skin note in the finish. 10% ABV $8/glass, $3/taster.”
Cascade is also releasing their Blueberry in bottles this Thursday the 6th at 4:30pm, at both the Barrel House and Raccoon Lodge: “This NW style sour ale is a blend of wheat and blond ales that were aged in oak barrels for up to 12 months before aging on fresh blueberries for an additional three months. 750 ml bottles sell for $20 apiece.”
Silver Moon Brewing (Bend): This week’s Growler Power Hour picks are Houndstooth Amber Ale and Hopnob IPA, two of the brewery’s great standards. The GPH takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 6pm, where you can fill a growler with one or both of the selected beers for only $6.
Chehalem Valley Brewing (Newberg): They have a couple of new brews being released this Friday, their Chocolate Cream Stout and a Hard Apple Cider. I don’t know much about these but the Stout by the name alone sounds like it could be awesome.
Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland): They’ve got their popular Kentucky Christmas (bourbon barrel aged Abominable) going on tap at both brewpubs on Wednesday at 5pm. This is definitely a fan favorite and one you can only get when it’s on draft, so don’t pass up the opportunity to score some of this at HUB!
Sky High Brewing (Corvallis): They also have a new beer going on tap tomorrow, Mountainous Stout: “Come in from the cold and warm up with Mountainous Stout from Sky High! This beautiful black oatmeal stout has a roasted coffee nose and silky mouth feel, with flavors of caramel, toffee, dark chocolate and of course, Grandma’s old-time oatmeal. Release party [Wednesday] during Hoppy Hour 4:30-6pm.”
