Oregon Beer News, 12/11/2012
Here’s the beer news from around Oregon for Tuesday, December 11. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Cascade Brewing (Portland): Their Tap It Tuesday tonight at the Barrel House at 6pm is featuring “Live” Supracot, “a NW style sour wheat ale that’s a special single barrel project from the blenders. It was barrel aged for four months before aging on 150 lbs of fresh apricots for an additional five months. Aromas of dusty apricot skins and blossoms are present to start. Huge, rich tart apricots cover your palate and lead to a dry fruit finish with a cotton candy note. Close your eyes, it’s like drinking a fresh apricot. 8% ABV, $8 glass, $3 taster.”
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): Today is the Brewery’s release of Hop Henge, their Experimental/Imperial IPA, and they’re celebrating at both the Bend Pub and Portland Pub, with Hop Henge available all day long and: “Get your first taste of Hop Henge Experimental IPA at our pubs in Bend and Portland on December 11th beginning at 11am. Also, be sure to grab your photo in front of our own “Hophenge/Stonehenge” structure stacked high with 12-pack boxes and join us for samples, a special menu and a toast at 5pm.”
Deschutes Brewery is also turning 25 next year: 1988 saw the opening of the downtown Bend brewpub, one that had the wherewithal to (shockingly, at the time) lead with a porter as its flagship brew. 1988 also saw the start of other great craft breweries, and Deschutes has announced plans for a “Class of ’88” reunion and collaboration brewing project with five of them to commemorate 25 years: North Coast Brewing, Rogue Brewery, Goose Island Brewing, and Great Lakes Brewing. This sounds like an incredible project and I’ll have more to say on that in a separate post soon.
Silver Moon Brewing (Bend): Their Growler Power Hour this week features Hopnob IPA and Bridge Creek Pilsner; the GPH gets you $6 growler fills on the selected beers from 4 to 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Pfriem Family Brewers (Hood River) has a new beer release coming up, a Cascadian Dark Ale: “Fresh cut Douglas Fir, Roast & Black Currents…come get your 1st taste of pFriem CDA this Thursday, Dec 13th @ 5:30 pm. Release party with FREE appetizer pairing, see you there!”
I posted yesterday about several winter beer “fests” going on in Portland this weekend; well Eugene is in on it too, with 16 Tons Beer & Wine offering up their Eugene Winter and Strong Ale Fest this Saturday and Sunday the 15th and 16th. “70+ Beers from Oregon and beyond. Special drafts and rare bottles. Free entry. Most 3oz Tasters $1. This is a not to be missed event. From 12pm-10pm Saturday & Sunday Dec 15-16 we will have all 70 beers!” The partial list of beers they posted on the event page is impressive as well, this would be highly recommended as a weekend excursion.
