Wild Goose Oatmeal Stout
Yet another Beer of the Month selection: Wild Goose Oatmeal Stout, from Wild Goose Brewery in Frederick, Maryland. (Which these days is owned by Flying Dog.)
Oatmeal Stout is one of Wild Goose’s signature year-round beers; it’s 6% alcohol and brewed more to an English style.
Appearance: Black with blood red highlight when held to the light; frothy mocha-latte head on top.
Smell: Sweet coffee and chocolate notes, a creamy, malty, appetizing aroma. Soft and mouth-watering (not harsh).
Taste: Lots of roasted malts with a touch of charcoal and astringency; dark coffee; tasty, standard stout fare.
Mouthfeel: Thinner than I’d like for an oatmeal stout; smooth with a creamy texture otherwise, and a lingering roasted bitterness.
Overall: Decent, well-brewed stout; thinner than I’d like but still tasty.
On BeerAdvocate, it scores an overall grade of B+. On RateBeer, it scores 3.41 out of 5 and is in their 79th percentile.
