Zupan’s Markets & pFriem Family Brewers Farm to Market IPA
The 23rd entry into Zupan’s Markets Farm to Market collaboration beer series is a West Coast IPA brewed with pFriem Family Brewers; the private-label beer, like all in the series, is available exclusively at the three Zupan’s locations around Portland. For this IPA, pFriem crafted a modern take on the style, describing the beer with these notes:
This beautiful IPA pours a bright golden color with intense aromatics of sweet oranges, tart pomelos and ripe kiwi. On the palate this beer dances brightly with hints of tropical fruit and bright hops, leaving you wanting another sip.
There’s no mention of what hops were used that I can find, but with these descriptors they definitely sound like newer varieties. It’s 6.7% alcohol by volume, and Zupan’s agency sent me cans of the beer to review.
Appearance: Golden and glowing, with decent-to-good clarity. Good white head.
Smell: Berry, lychee, light citrus oil, dank green notes. Some fresh chard, white pepper, bright floral aromas like wildflowers and cornflower. Perhaps some mango, guava sneaking in there as well.
Taste: Straightforward, clean bitterness with a touch of garlic greens and bitter dandelion; herbal and tonic. Clean malt with mellow toast, biscuit. A bit of orange pith at the back, some light cooling menthol, some earthiness in the herbal character.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, clean, lingering bitterness with a cooling finish.
Overall: It’s tasty and clean with a nice “modern” profile.
